What is Vaginoplasty?

June 29, 2018

Vaginoplasty (also known as posterior colporrhaphy) is a plastic surgery procedure done to tighten, repair, or even reconstruct the vagina. This is an invasive surgical procedure that involves tightening the skin inside the vagina. There are other cosmetic procedures that women can get done at the same time as a vaginoplasty, as well. After giving birth, women may experience vaginal laxity due to stretching of the tissue and muscles. This can cause a wide range of affects on the quality of life such as impacting your sex life, feeling less confident and happy with the way your body is, and even being unable to use tampons properly. A vaginoplasty essentially tightens the muscles inside the vagina and removes extra tissue.

What Does the Procedure Do?

It depends on why the procedure has been chosen or recommended. In some cases, injury or trauma lead to the desire to repair and restore the appearance and function of the vagina. While in other cases, there can be existing congenital/birth defects where a vaginoplasty procedure can provide a patient with a normally functioning vagina. Essentially, the procedure is meant to restore the desired and optimal structure and function of the vaginal area.

Risks and Complications

Similar to other types of cosmetic or medical surgeries, there are some risks and complications that can happen with a vaginoplasty. First, because this type of procedure is invasive and will require incisions, there is always a risk of developing infection, bleeding excessively, and some other rare complications. Additionally, because anesthesia is used to perform this procedure, there may also be risks associated with anesthesia that should be taken into consideration. The best people to discuss these issues with are your surgeon and anesthesiologist. Your surgeon and anesthesiologist will have multiple consultations with you to discuss your medical history, lifestyle, and other factors in order to determine which risks and complications you may face.

Some women have higher risks and complications than others do based on their lifestyle and medical histories. They will also perform a series of tests to make sure you are healthy and well prepared for the surgery. Finally, experienced and reputable surgeons will know how to handle complications and risks that may develop so it’s important to choose your surgeon wisely by doing adequate research. This is a very intimate and important decision and you should feel safe trusting your surgeon to perform this procedure on you. Don’t rush into any decision and make sure you choose your surgeon based on experience and reputation.

Recovery

Recovery from a vaginoplasty can take a few weeks. The first few days will likely be painful and you will have to rest. It’s helpful to have a loved one close by to help you during this time. Your doctor will likely prescribe you medications to prevent infections from developing as well as to manage the pain. You will have to abstain from sex and using tampons for several weeks to ensure you heal properly. Throughout your recovery, you will also have frequent visits with your surgeon to ensure everything went well in the procedure and that your recovery process is going smoothly.

Vaginoplasty is an intimate but very important procedure that has helped numerous women feel confident and happy with their bodies. If you think vaginoplasty may be right for your needs, talk to a plastic surgeon to get professional advice and fully understand the procedure.

If you are interested in a vaginoplasty or any other type of plastic surgery, make sure to find an experienced and reputable surgeon who you can trust with your body. The experts at Atlantic Center of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery have a lot of experience performing plastic surgeries with success. Call 954-983-1899 today to make an appointment and learn about all the possibilities out there for you.
