Plastic Surgery After a Baby: Is It Safe?

July 23, 2018

If there is one thing that changes the way your body looks, it is childbirth. Having a baby can be a wonderful and life-altering experience, but it is also unfortunately quite a body-altering experience. It is a simple fact that many women will find out that their body will most likely not go back to its pre-pregnancy self. Luckily, “mommy makeover” procedures can help you feel beautiful and young even after you have children.

Mommy makeovers are typically a series of plastic surgery procedures that involve changing how various areas of the body look, to restore that pre-pregnancy body. It’s important that you feel confident and happy with the way you look, and these procedures can make it possible when exercise, dieting, and other procedures fail. But when is the right time to get these procedures done? That can depend on several factors: the type of procedure you want to get done, your family planning goals, how long you plan on breastfeeding, and more.

It’s important to point out that it may be better to wait on getting any mommy makeover procedures until you are done giving birth to all of your children. Your body and weight will fluctuate and change every time you get pregnant, and if you do not want to go through these procedures multiple times, it may be worthwhile to wait until you are ready to stop having children. Similarly, you should be at your goal weight for at least 6 months before getting any mommy makeover procedure done. If you get a procedure done at one weight, you may not be happy with how it looks after you lose or gain weight later on.

There are many types of mommy makeover procedures that you can get done depending on what you want to fix. Here are the most popular ones:

Abdominoplasty & Liposuction – Also known as a tummy tuck, abdominoplasty removes the skin on the abdomen area and can help you achieve a smooth and sculpted look. Liposuction removes deposits of fat in various parts of your body that you just haven’t been able to lose through exercise and diet. Many women get a combination of these procedures done at the same time to achieve their goals. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends that you wait at least 6 months after giving birth to get these procedures done. Your body’s hormones go on a roller coaster pre- and post-pregnancy. It takes time for your body to go back to its pre-pregnancy self. That means waiting about 6 months after giving birth for your hormones to return to their normal levels. Hormones can change the elasticity of your skin and if you get an abdominoplasty and/or liposuction done right after giving birth, your skin may change after your hormones return to their normal levels.

Breast Procedures – There are a variety of breast procedures you can get done including a breast lift, reduction, or augmentation. These procedures can help you achieve the look you want for your body. It’s important that you seek breast procedures to be done 6 months after you have stopped breastfeeding. Your breasts will change dramatically before, during, and after your pregnancy as well as giving birth. This includes when you breastfeed. Make sure to give your body 6 months after stopping breastfeeding so that they can adjust back to normal size before the procedure is done.

If you are interested in plastic surgery after giving birth, make sure to find an experienced and reputable surgeon who you can trust with your body. The experts at Atlantic Center of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery have a lot of experience performing plastic surgeries with success. Call 954-983-1899 today to make an appointment and learn about all the possibilities out there for you.
