General Pediatric Plastic Surgery

General pediatric plastic surgery includes the treatment of wounds, burns, scars, and skin problems such as moles and cysts. Dr. Stelnicki is a leader in this area, and routinely perform these procedures with an emphasis on minimal pain and discomfort for your child. Dr. Stelnicki strives for beautiful results with minimal scarring and a quick return to school and everyday life.

Moles, Cysts, and Skin Tags

Skin problems such as moles, cysts, and skin tags commonly require procedures to remove them. These skin problems can be unsightly, cause discomfort, affect surrounding tissues, or contain dangerous cells.

At the Atlantic Center we know that these procedures can be frightening for both you and your child. We specialize in creating an environment where there is minimal anxiety or discomfort for your child.

Our team of plastic surgeons focuses on highly aesthetic results with minimal scarring. We always send our specimens for pathology examination under a microscope. Whenever possible we use absorbable sutures (stitches) to avoid any need for suture removal.

For more details about moles, cysts, and other skin lesions, please download our patient handout.

Scars, Keloids, and Burns

After a comprehensive assessment of your child's problems, the team at Atlantic Center will make recommendations that may include massage, topical creams, painless injections, or scar revision surgery.

We do treat acute burns in children, which is considered an outpatient treatment. We will discuss the plan in detail with you and your family members, and we will closely follow your child on a regular basis to ensure the treatment is effective and the best possible results are achieved.

Pediatric Wounds

At our pediatric wound care clinic, we provide both surgical and nonsurgical care for acute and chronic wounds in children, assessing each wound to customize a treatment plan to aid in the healing process.

We offer a variety of special wound care dressings and techniques and strive to educate the family on wound cleansing and dressing changes, so they are comfortable and effective in caring for their child's wounds.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa

We offer a unique and highly effective first-line treatment for hidradenitis suppurativa, which involves nonsurgical therapies with lasers. This procedure consists of a series of treatments (5-8) for depilation (hair removal), and it frequently results in total resolution of the disease.

In the rare event of relapse or failure to clear the diseased tissue, we offer a number of surgical therapeutic options.

Congenital Hairy Nevus

Patients with giant nevus (giant pigmented moles) are at significantly higher risk of having dangerous cells (melanoma) in the pigmented skin. At the Atlantic Center we council families and guide them through surgical options, including serial excision or reconstruction with expanded skin flaps.

Common wounds we treat:

  • Burns
  • Crushing injuries
  • Bacterial infections
  • Surgical wounds
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers, often caused by G tubes or tracheostomy tubes
  • Lacerations
  • Animal bites

Treatments we offer:

  • IV infiltrations
  • Debridement of unhealthy tissue
  • Infection control and management
  • Chemical cauterization
  • Prescribed topical creams
