C.H.A.R.M.- a 501c3 Charity founded by Dr. Eric Stelnicki
Mission & Vision of CHARM:
Dr. Eric Stelnicki, MD, Founder, started Children’s Health and Rehabilitative Missions (CHARM) as a 501(c)3 charity dedicated to bringing hope to children around the world by joining medical, nursing, and allied health professionals together to perform life-saving surgical procedures and medical treatment to impoverished children who would otherwise never receive the necessary care.
Currently CHARM involves plastic and reconstructive surgery, podiatry, and primary care services. The goal is to expand in order to offer many more medical specialties such as general surgery, breast cancer specialists, speech pathology, dentistry, psychiatry, and more. With increasing funds, CHARM hopes to extend its mission and provide teams to many countries. In addition it is our desire to provide the medical and allied health services to children in Florida who are either uninsured or due to the high cost of insurance and the associated deductibles, are unable to afford care.
CHARM is led by Dr. Eric Stelnicki, MD, a pediatric plastic and craniofacial reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Stelnicki has been treating children for 18 years and has been involved in medical missions for 25 years, performing over a thousand surgical procedures all over the world for both children and adults free of cost. CHARM was created in response to the desperate, overwhelming need for medical and surgical care for children in developing and third world countries. Dr. Stelnicki, along with his wife Melissa Stelnicki, BSN, RN, (an operating room nurse also experienced with medical missions) recognized the need for medical professionals to join together as a cohesive team in order to offer a wide range of specialized care to patients. Dr. Stelnicki was contacted by government officials to bring his expertise to the people of Guyana, where there is a desperate need for children’s plastic and reconstructive surgery. CHARM brings medical, nursing, and allied health professionals together to perform medical missions both locally and abroad to impoverished children in need of vital surgical and medical care. CHARM also exists to educate and train professionals in other countries in order to care for their own people to the best of their ability and provide a continuum of care to patients post operatively.

NEW USVI PHYSICIAN BRINGS MODERN TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR PEDIATRIC PATIENTS
Recently, Virgin Islands Ear, Nose & Throat welcomed Dr. Eric Stelnicki to their practice. He will travel between the St. Croix and St. Thomas offices, with privileges at both Juan F. Luis and Roy Lester Schneider Hospitals. Dr. Stelnicki is currently practicing in the U.S. Virgin Islands one week per month to bring modern medicine options to pediatric patients, but hopes that patient demand can make the Caribbean his full-time home.
Dr. Stelnicki is a plastic surgeon who works primarily with pediatric patients. He specializes in reconstructive surgery. He is affiliated with an ear, nose and throat practice because many of his patients have ENT-related issues. This includes babies born with a cleft palette, deformities of the skull or without ears.
Especially for toddlers who develop deformational plagiocephaly (a misshapen skull), Dr. Stelnicki will be the first to offer helmet therapy in the USVI, to correct children’s flat or deformed heads. This is welcome news for parents and parents to-be, who would otherwise have to leave island for this sometimes-lengthy course of treatment.
The motivation for Dr. Stelnicki to serve in the U.S. Virgin Islands is to offer new treatment options (like the aforementioned helmet therapy) which weren’t previously available to island residents. His goal is to become a constant and reliable medical resource, particularly for emergency situations. Dr. Stelnicki hopes to keep residents near home for surgeries and treatments, which may have otherwise forced them off-island either temporarily or permanently.
Having trained at New York University and served as faculty at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Stelnicki brings high-level medical expertise to our island community. He has more than 15 years of experience with complex reconstructive issues.

Virgin Islands Ear, Nose & Throat warmly welcomes Eric Stelnicki, M.D. — the territory's premier pediatric plastic surgeon
Established 15 years ago, today Virgin Islands Ear, Nose & Throat is the most comprehensive otolaryngology practice in the Caribbean. Serving both adult and pediatric patients, the multi award winning practice addresses sinusitis and allergies, sleep and snoring disorders, hearing loss, dizziness and tinnitus, ear nose and throat problems, voice and swallowing disorders, as well as providing facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, Botox, Thermage, Restylane, Juvederm — and other cosmetic treatments.
Recently, practice founder Adam M. Shapiro, M.D., F.A.C.S., announced the addition of Eric J. Stelnicki, M.D., to its roster of highly skilled medical professionals. Said Dr. Shapiro, “With Dr. Stelnicki on our team, we are the only medical practice in the territory to provide the services of a pediatric plastic surgeon.”
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, if a child needs surgery to fix a deformity caused by a birth defect, injury, illness, or tumor, a pediatric plastic surgeon is uniquely qualified. A board certified pediatric plastic surgeon has the education, experience and qualifications to treat children from newborn to age 21 and may make the difference in achieving the best possible cosmetic result. Pediatric plastic surgeons know how to examine and treat children in a way that makes them relaxed and cooperative. In addition, pediatric plastic surgeons use equipment specifically designed for children. This helps create a comfortable and non-threatening environment for the child.
With a thoughtful smile, Dr. Stelnicki commented, “Children are not little adults. For one thing, they are always in various stages of growth.” The doctor further explained it is vital to consider that youngsters have any number of health issues to consider ranging from common childhood diseases to issues with tonsils. Children of a certain age also may be more susceptible to dog bites. Additionally, little ones cannot always say what is bothering them, or answer medical questions, and are not always able to be calm and cooperative during a medical examination. Thankfully, Dr. Stelnicki is fully versed in offering the finest one-on-one care to patients from newborn to age 21.
Born and raised in Florida, Dr. Stelnicki has been practicing plastic surgery in South Florida since 1998. Asked why he chose a career in medicine, Dr. Stelnicki advised that he was inspired by his father, a successful podiatrist, to pursue a profession focused on helping others. In fact, both he and his father have frequently volunteered to care for the less fortunate in remote locations throughout the globe including Africa, China, Mexico, Honduras and Guyana. In 2010, while on a volunteer mission, Dr. Stelnicki met his wife, Melissa in an operating room in Honduras. Currently Melissa is completing a Masters program in nursing.
Dr. Stelnicki is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Association of Pediatric Plastic Surgeons, International Society of Craniofacial Surgery, American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, Broward County Pediatric Society, and Palm Beach Pediatric Society. He skillfully provides treatment for birth defects of the face and skull including cleft lip and palate, misshapen skull, a protruding or absent ear, as well as webbed fingers and toes, injuries, birthmarks, scars and burns. Cosmetic surgery to improve a child’s self-image also is available. The doctor advised that although some birth defects may be attributable to poor nutrition, many are spontaneous occurrences. He also shared that in this modern day with babies being placed on their backs from birth — while significantly decreasing incidents of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome — a side effect is that one in 50 children will develop a ‘flat head.’ He quickly offered that a non-surgical fix is available.
Dr. Stelnicki received his training in pediatric plastic surgery and craniofacial surgery at the New York University Institute of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at NYU Medical Center. The doctor shared that he was taught by some of the greatest minds in plastic surgery who helped refine his skills while showing him the importance of continually working to advance the specialty of plastic surgery through research, resident training, community involvement, and charity. His training at NYU helped Dr. Stelnicki bring innovations such as nasoalveolar molding for the treatment of cleft lip and palate, new methods of mandible and maxillary distraction for reshaping jaw bones, endoscopic surgery for the treatment of craniosynostosis, virtual surgical planning for facial reconstruction, and many other advances to South Florida. Dr. Stelnicki currently is the only plastic surgeon in Broward, Palm Beach, and Collier counties —as well as the U.S. Virgin Islands — to offer reconstructive services focused solely on children.
Dr. Stelnicki completed a general plastic surgery fellowship at Washington University Barnes Teaching Hospital in St. Louis Missouri. There he was trained in the full scope of plastic surgery including pediatric plastic surgery, hand surgery, microvascular and nerve reconstructive surgery, body recontouring, breast augmentation and reconstruction, lipoplasty, Mommy Makeover surgery, rhinoplasty, and a host of other plastic surgery techniques. He also trained at the University of California San Francisco in the pediatric and fetal surgery department. He performed a research fellowship at UCSF as well, and is one of the few plastic surgeons in the country to receive a prestigious National Institutes of Health research grant for the study of scarless wound healing. Thanks to his training, Dr. Stelnicki possesses the ability to operate on all parts of the body and to address even the most difficult reconstructive cases. Patients from all over the world have sought out his advice and expertise for their plastic surgery needs. Dr. Stelnicki’s research is presented each year at some of the most prestigious national and international plastic surgery meetings, where he is a leader and innovator in the field. In addition, he is the founder of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Cleft and Craniofacial Center, which, under his guidance, is now Florida’s largest craniofacial center of excellence. In his personal life, Dr. Stelnicki is the proud father of four daughters.
In addition to Dr. Shapiro and Dr. Stelnicki, Virgin Islands Ear, Nose & Throat provides the medical services of Ryan Smolarz, M.D., and Dr. Gavin M. Gassen, M.D. as well as Judith Hirsch, MA, CCC-A, and Sharon M. Berry, AU.D.,CCC-A On St. Thomas, Virgin Islands Ear, Nose & Throat is in the Paragon Medical Building, Suite 308. On St. Croix, visit No. 8 Beeston Hill Medical Center.
Dr. Eric J. Stelnicki of Atlantic Center joins Virgin Islands Ear, Nose & Throat, practice in St. Thomas, VI – the only practice in the territory to provide pediatric plastic surgery services!
“With Dr. Stelnicki on our team, we are the only medical practice in the territory to provide the services of a pediatric plastic surgeon,” Dr. Shapiro said.
Dr. Stelnicki’s addition to the St. Thomas practice opens the door to a range of treatments previously unavailable to children living in the Virgin Islands. The practice is the most comprehensive otolaryngology practice in the Caribbean, serving adult and pediatric patients with a variety of surgeries, treatments, and patient care.
Dr. Stelnicki will be traveling to the Virgin Islands Ear, Nose & Throat practice monthly to provide pediatric and adult plastic surgery and patient care.
A group of volunteers from Barry University joined Dr. Eric J. Stelnicki of Atlantic Center of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery and his father, Dr. James Stelnicki, on a medical mission trip to Georgetown, Guyana last summer.
The trip was funded in-part by Children’s Health and Rehabilitative Missions (CHARM), a non-profit organization established by Dr. Eric J. Stelnicki. The mission to Guyana, a small South American nation with only one plastic surgeon for its entire population, has an urgent need for pediatric reconstructive surgery and podiatric care.
Together, these medical teams provided in-country medical and nursing education. Through this, the team ultimately hopes to achieve long-term sustainability for providing reconstructive and surgical care on a continual basis in Guyana. The group ended up seeing more than 100 patients and performed around 35 surgeries.
