Getting Your Fill: Understanding the Longevity of Injectables

March 23, 2018

Have you ever noticed one of your close friends or coworkers looking a little “fresher” than they did the week before? It could be the result of dermal fillers. While injectable fillers used to be synonymous with the “frozen” faces of aging Hollywood starlets – they’ve skyrocketed in popularity in recent years due to their convenience, safety, and the fact that they are less invasive than say, a facelift.

BOTOX®, the name that put injectables on the map, is a prescription drug known as a neurotoxin that can be injected into facial muscles to relax and smooth out wrinkles. By temporarily “turning off” the face’s natural muscle activity, this technique produces a noticeably rested look within just 24-48 hours. Whether you’re trying to combat crow’s feet and those pesky number “11” forehead lines – or soften marionette (smile) lines, BOTOX has you covered. Your results will last anywhere between three and six months. When the muscle activity resumes, the wrinkles will become present again and you’ll need a touch-up. Should you decide that BOTOX isn’t for you, there are plenty of other options in the marketplace.

As we get older, our face can become sunken in, especially around the eyes and cheeks. Find the fountain of youth with dermal fillers that can plump you up by increasing the volume of facial tissues for a more youthful appearance. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved several different fillers for safe use. Turn back the hands of time with Juvéderm®, Juvéderm Voluma®, Restylane® Lyft, Restylane® Silk, and Sculptra®, all wildly successful dermal fillers that deliver consistent results.

Soft, pillowy lips are synonymous with youthful good looks; if you’ve noticed that your mouth turns down at the corners, conveying a tired look – Restylane® Silk might make all the difference. Like Restylane® classic, but with the added benefit of lidocaine to diminish discomfort, this filler’s results will last from six months to one year. Have you always coveted sky-high cheekbones? Contouring with makeup can only do so much. Restylane Lyft is the only thing standing between you and the look you’re longing for. According to Restylane USA (the parent company that produces the product), most patients see a noticeable improvement in facial fullness after 2 months, and 73% were still satisfied after a year.

Looking to diminish your double chin once and for all? You don’t have to go under the knife. Dermal fillers like Kybella® offer a permanent solution, without the invasiveness of traditional surgeries. Harnessing the power of the body’s naturally occurring fat-fighting molecules (synthetic deoxycholic acid), Kybella’s active ingredient aids in the breakdown of excess fat at the site where they’re injected. It’s important to decide whether downtime is a deal breaker for you, as traditional surgeries require a significant recuperation period. Fillers like Kybella, on the other hand, require a series of treatments; but other than some sporadic bruising and swelling, you’ll be able to go about your business as usual.

Not sure which filler is right for your needs? Atlantic Center for Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery offers a variety of temporary and permanent dermal fillers. The longevity for each varies, so speak with their specialists about your specific goals. Their team will work with you to achieve the optimal aesthetic result.
