Why Would Your Plastic Surgeon Recommend Breast Revision Surgery?

by Gianina (SU)

Most women who undergo a breast augmentation surgery are not aware that they’ll most likely need another surgery at some point in their life. Some revision surgeries might be needed to repair the initial surgery or any complications it caused, such as when the body rejects the implant or otherwise reacts negatively.

Even if the initial surgery was a success, the patient may eventually require implant replacements or another revision surgery. Your plastic surgeon may recommend breast revision surgery for your health, for optimum appearance, or both reasons.

Why Do I Need Breast Revision Surgery?

An experienced plastic surgeon will always have your health, as well as your appearance, as a top priority. If they suggest a breast revision, it’s in your best interest to consider all of the factors involved. Below are the types of breast revision surgery:

·       Aging Implant – After a breast augmentation, implants can become old-looking, hard, or poorly shaped over time. This can cause your breasts to sag, look lumpy, or be too firm, causing discomfort.

·       Ruptured Implant – An implant rupture could happen at any time. When this happens, you should have the implant removed as soon as possible. The ruptured implant could also cause your breast to look poorly shaped.

·       Capsular Contracture – This is a complication that develops when internal scar tissue from the surgery forms a tight or compressing capsule around a breast implant. The capsule will contract around the implant until it becomes hard and poorly shaped. The breast may become painful and stiff, and the capsule could affect the appearance or shape of the breast.

·       Rippling of Breast or Implant – Saline or silicone breast implants can develop rippling that shows through the skin. Rippling is the appearance of visible ridges or wrinkles on the implant that usually develops on the side, bottom, or in between the breasts.

·       Double Bubble Implants – If your implants are inserted behind your chest muscle and then natural breast tissue sags, known as breast ptosis, then this could result in a “double bubble.” This occurs when natural breast sagging, which can come with aging, is combined with the implant that is now higher on the chest – so the combination causes a groove to form.

·       Changing Breast Size – If a surgery has resulted in physical health complications, such as back pain, your doctor may recommend reducing the implant size to alleviate the strain on your back.
