The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization to assess the qualifications of Surgeons.  

A Board Certified Surgeon is a Physician in the field of surgery whom proceeds in a voluntary process to meet a defined standard of education and training. Obtaining a medical license sets the minimum competency requirements to diagnose and treat patients, it is not specialty specific. Board Certification demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a particular specialty and/or subspecialty of medical practice. Not all surgeons are board certified.
